Why Buy Your 627 From TK Custom
Smith & Wesson revolvers are our specialty. We have spent decades building, machining, tuning, and developing performance parts specifically for S&W revolvers. The Model 627 is a platform we know inside and out. When you order one from us, you have the opportunity to take an already excellent Performance Center revolver and have it built the way it should be, in house, under Master Gunsmith Eli Johnson.
The Performance Action Job is serious gunsmithing, not a spring swap. We keep your factory hammer and trigger, correct the common factory issues, hand fit the critical engagement areas, install select TK Custom parts, and tune the action as a complete system. Crane alignment, endshake, cylinder timing, double action sear work, and every internal contact surface and radius polished and corrected.
You keep your factory hammer and trigger, you keep single action, and you get a crisp single action break.
For shooters who want the best we can build, this is where the 627 becomes a true TK Custom revolver. We replace the factory hammer and trigger with the TK Custom Diamond Speed Hammer and Diamond Speed Trigger, both forged and EDM cut, then inspect, correct, fit, polish, and tune the revolver as a complete system.
This is a double action only setup. There is no single action in this configuration. It is built for the smoothest, cleanest, most refined Smith & Wesson action we offer.
The package also includes cylinder chamfering, extended cylinder release, extended firing pin, reduced firing pin spring, internal lock plug, Wolff reduced main spring, rebound spring, adjustable strain screw, and shims and overtravel stop setup where needed. The action is then hand fit, polished, aligned, and tuned throughout by our revolver specialists.
The difference is not subtle.
This is a hand built action, not a modified one, and you will feel it the moment you run the gun. Reset is faster, the double action cycle is cleaner, and the entire revolver feels more refined from beginning to end. We are rebuilding the action around how a high performance Smith & Wesson revolver should actually run.
TK Custom gunsmithing is backed by our Lifetime Warranty. We build these revolvers to be shot, and we stand behind our work.

Choosing Your Pull Weight
Pull weight is not what separates our two action jobs. We can set either package to either weight below. What you are choosing between is the action itself, the parts that go into it, and how the revolver feels when you run it.
What actually sets the weight is the primer you shoot. A factory Smith & Wesson double action pull often runs around 13LB. We build to two targets:
-
Federal primers only, 6 to 7.5LB. Federal primers are the most sensitive on the market, which lets us run lighter springs and take the double action pull to its lightest reliable weight. This setup is tuned for Federal and Federal only. Run another brand through it and you will get light primer strikes.
-
All brands, 8.5LB. If you shoot whatever you can find, or you are loading defensive ammunition, this is your setup. It is reliable across every primer brand on the market and it is still a world away from a factory action.
Tell us what you shoot when you place the order and we will tune the revolver to that setup. Reliability comes first. The goal is an action that is smooth, fast, and dependable, not just light.

Precision Cylinder Work for the Model 627
-
Cylinder Chamfering Our cylinder chamfering removes the sharp edges that cause a loaded moon clip to hang up during a reload. We chamfer the outside diameter of the cylinder, the area around the recessed moon clip machining, and under the ratchet, then polish and blend the entire area together so loaded moon clips drop in cleanly without catching. Chamfering is already included in the Ultimate Master Action Job and can be added to any other configuration.
-
Chamber Honing A separate process focused on smoother extraction. We hone the chambers to improve the internal surface finish so fired cases release and extract more cleanly.
-
9mm Rechambering Our 9mm rechambering conversion gives you the additional ability to shoot 9mm with moon clips while retaining the ability to load and fire .38 Special and .357 Magnum. The conversion includes cylinder machining, chamfering, chamber honing, and five stainless steel moon clips.
-
Before you add the 9mm conversion, read this:
- 9mm must be fired with moon clips.
- 38 Special and .357 Magnum can still be fired individually or with moon clips.
- Rechambering is done to factory ammunition specifications only. A rechambered cylinder is not for high pressure ammunition. No 9mm NATO, 9mm +P, or 9mm +P+, and no high pressure .38 or .357 loads.
- .38 and .357 brass may show slight case head bulging in a rechambered cylinder. This affects reloaders only and does not affect function.
-
If you reload, send ten of your cartridges with the order so we can rechamber to what you actually shoot.

Built for ICORE, USPSA, and Steel Challenge
That versatility is a major reason the 627 Performance Center has become such a respected competition revolver. The 8 shot cylinder gives you two additional rounds over a traditional six shot revolver, while the 5 inch barrel and full size stainless N frame provide the balance and stability needed for fast double action shooting. Whether you are building an ICORE, USPSA, Steel Challenge, or range revolver, the 627 gives us an exceptional foundation to work with.
Your 627 ships with three OEM moon clips, and we manufacture 627 clips in house in multiple thicknesses. Brass selection matters, and extractor groove dimensions vary by manufacturer with no SAAMI spec governing them. If you are unsure which clip you need, use our Moon Clip Fitment Guide or call the shop.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the difference between the Performance Action Job and the Ultimate
-
Master Action Job?
The Performance Action Job keeps your factory hammer and trigger and retains single action. The Ultimate Master Action Job replaces them with our forged, EDM cut Diamond Speed Hammer and Diamond Speed Trigger, adds cylinder chamfering and the full spring and internal parts package, and is a double action only setup. The difference is the action itself, not the pull weight.
-
Is the Ultimate Master Action Job double action only?
Yes. There is no single action in that configuration. If you need single action, choose the Performance Action Job.
-
What double action pull weight can I expect?
That depends on what you shoot, not on which package you pick. We can build either package to 6 to 7.5LB tuned for Federal primers only, or to 8.5LB that stays reliable with every primer brand. Tell us which one you want when you order.
-
Why do you recommend Federal primers?
Federal primers are the most sensitive on the market, which lets us run lighter springs and take the double action pull to its lightest reliable weight. Harder primers require heavier springs to keep ignition dependable, so the pull comes back up.
-
Is cylinder chamfering included?
Chamfering is included in the Ultimate Master Action Job. It can be added to a factory revolver or to the Performance Action Job.
-
How many moon clips come with the revolver?
Three OEM moon clips are included with the factory revolver. If you add the 9mm rechambering conversion, five stainless steel TK Custom moon clips are included with that service.
-
What is the lead time?
Standard lead time is 4 to 5 months. Expedited service is available in the drop down menu on this page if you need the revolver sooner.
-
Can I still shoot .38 Special and .357 Magnum after the 9mm conversion?
Yes. You can still fire .38 Special and .357 Magnum individually or with moon clips. There are limits worth knowing: a rechambered cylinder is rechambered to factory ammunition specifications and is not for high pressure ammunition, 9mm must be fired with moon clips, and .38 and .357 brass may show slight case head bulging after conversion, which affects reloaders only and does not affect function. If you reload, send ten of your cartridges with the order.
-
How does the FFL transfer work?
Select your FFL in the options on this page when you place the order and we will handle the transfer from there.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Federal or Remington & others makes works the best with the .025 thick Full Moonclips, which fit all the .38/357 standard moonclip. They allow the cartridges to have some movement or wiggle so that they will fall right into the chambers once properly aligned. Winchester brass does not work at all as the groove width is too tight/small.

-
There is no SAAMI specifications for the extractor groove and each manufacturer makes them as they want. The following list gives you a great example. This is why the diameter size of the brass is critical to proper loading, unloading and fitment. Cartridge diameter too big and moonclip too small causes the moonclip to bend. The cartridge should rotate within their respective place and wobble slightly when all cartridges are loaded.
