Endshake Shims — S&W K/L/N Frame Revolver
Endshake shims for S&W K, L, and N frame revolvers, used to take fore-and-aft play out of the cylinder. Endshake is the small back-and-forth movement of the cylinder on the yoke, and as a revolver wears it can grow enough to affect timing and headspace. These thin shims fit on the yoke to take that play back out and bring the cylinder back to proper endshake, restoring tight lockup and correct headspace.
Why it matters: too much endshake is more than a feel problem. It can increase headspace, hurt accuracy, and over time it lets the cylinder batter back and forth under recoil. Shimming the endshake back into spec is the standard, proven fix and brings the gun back to how it should run.
Who it is for: anyone whose cylinder has developed noticeable fore-and-aft play, and gunsmiths or experienced builders refreshing a high-mileage S&W.

Installation note: setting endshake means removing the cylinder and yoke and checking your gap with a feeler gauge, so this is a job for someone comfortable inside an S&W or for your gunsmith. Add only enough shim to bring endshake into spec without binding.

Federal or Remington & others makes works the best with the .025 thick Full Moonclips, which fit all the .38/357 standard moonclip. They allow the cartridges to have some movement or wiggle so that they will fall right into the chambers once properly aligned. Winchester brass does not work at all as the groove width is too tight/small.

There is no SAAMI specifications for the extractor groove and each manufacturer makes them as they want. The following list gives you a great example. This is why the diameter size of the brass is critical to proper loading, unloading and fitment. Cartridge diameter too big and moonclip too small causes the moonclip to bend. The cartridge should rotate within their respective place and wobble slightly when all cartridges are loaded.
